American Youth
Football is probably
the most difficult lesson for any beginning coach, parent or players
to learn. That is why coaching at the younger level (7 - 14 years) is
so critical because this level is where children learn the basic
fundamentals of the sport. Most youth league coaches are parents who
have other jobs and haven't been exposed to the techniques and
training required to create successful athletes. However, most coaches
and parents are eager to learn and want to see their children do well.
Of course,
some people will tell you that you can do fine without a strong
understanding of american football, but let's face it successfully
teaching any sport to pre-high school athletes is tough! This is doubly
true when coaching youth football!
Just take a look
at the statistics of what is happening to our youth sports programs today.
- Approximately
30 million young people participate in youth sports annually,
- Somewhere
between 60-70 percent of them quit before reaching their high school
years.
- The
top
threereasons for quitting are:

- The coach showed favoritism,
or
- The coach didn’t know what he was
doing!
There are other reasons that young people drop out
of youth sports other than just bad coaches. However, the statistics
speak for themselves.
